Elizabeth woke up early the next morning and went to take a long run on the treadmill. She had retired immediately after George was escorted from the house and then pretended to be asleep when Charlotte entered the room a short while later. In actuality, she had slept little. Every nerve in her body was twitchy, and she had to find some way to get rid of the excess energy before it drove her mad.

When she heard someone walking toward the exercise area, she guessed who it was without looking.

“Good morning.” Will sounded somber, and she felt him studying her.

Elizabeth punched at the screen of the machine and began a five-minute cool down period. “Just about done. I’ll start on breakfast once I shower.”

“Are you feeling better after last night?”

Elizabeth hit the button to immediately stop the treadmill, grabbed the white towel she’d brought with her, and wiped down the machine.

“Never better. See you downstairs later. Hope you all like pancakes. I feel like pancakes this morning.”

She walked as she spoke, not looking at Will or giving him an opportunity to reply before she was through the door.
